Today’s Capital Campaign: Best Practices for Institutional Success
Kevin Heaney, Vice President, Constituent Programs & Associate Campaign Director, Oregon State University Foundation
Campaigns have tremendous impacts on colleges and universities, and not just financially. Perhaps now, more than ever, our institutions need thoughtful and strategic campaigns to advance their missions and grow their enterprises. This session will explore the benefits and core elements of successful campaigns, with particular attention paid to best practices and new strategies to address the challenges we face in today’s economic climate. I hope you will join us for a lively and interactive conversation that will make us all better prepared to lead our institutions through these transformational campaigns.
The Artful Ask
Sheila Biggers, Assistant Dean, External Relations, Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia
The ability to artfully ask for a gift is influenced by the individual personalities and characteristics of the donor, the solicitor and the organization in question. A truly effective solicitation requires that the fundraiser understand all three of these players and how the relationship between them can result in a positive expression of shared values in the form of a donation. In this session, you will learn to look at the solicitation from different angles and learn something about what you personally bring to the equation that may influence success.
After a fun, interesting and interactive session including group discussion and role play, participants will be able to:
- Effectively and comfortably ask for a donation.
- Identify motivations for giving and how to articulate the need for a donation from the donor’s perspective.
- Mitigate the impact their own attitude towards money has on the solicitation and fundraising success.
Making Yourself Invaluable in Today’s Professional Climate
Stacey Lane, Director of the Alumni Career Network, Willamette University
This session will kick-off with an interactive exercise about career management best practices, leading to a more in-depth discussion about “career derailers” – a popular exercise for those seeking professional development as they can identify opportunities for themselves personally. The latter portion of the session will highlight four panelists with different successful career paths and the career development strategies they utilized to reach their goals.
There will be plenty of time for Q&A and participants will leave with information regarding how the rules of work have changed – and how to manage their careers accordingly, how to recover from career derailers (and yes, EVERYONE encounters a derailer now and then!), and how to identify their own leadership and emotional intelligence strengths.
Silos & Ships: Implications for Advancement Managers
Dr. Kevin Ludlum, Executive Director of Development, Hankamer School of Business & Computer Science, Baylor University
Where silos in the agricultural world can increase yield and productivity, they often decrease productivity by restricting the flow of information and/or resources in the business world.
In the advancement world silos take on many forms, but they affect everyone within the development cycle. From the donor to the front-line advancement manager or officer to the president of the institution, no one is immune to the effects of the “silo mentality.”
In this session we will: 1) examine the root causes of silos in advancement operations, 2) explore the impact on the donor and advancement operations, and 3) propose steps each individual can apply while combating silos in their advancement operations.
